Sometimes it happens in the most unexpected places. Those times when the Holy Spirit speaks to your heart and moves you almost to tears. For me on this day it was in the bathroom as I was putting on my makeup and using my Chi. I was listening to Christian music through my phone, and a song came on that was new to me called “Oceans” by Hillsong United. As I listened to the words, the Lord used the song to speak to me that morning, especially the chorus at the end.
Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior
A few weeks before that particular morning, the Lord had given me the idea for Women with Purpose, and I was in the process of seeking counsel and praying and talking to my husband to see whether God was really calling me to do this risky, scary thing – to start a local ministry to women in the marketplace. But here He was, in my bathroom, speaking to me through this song to encourage me to trust Him, to follow Him, to have a “trust without borders”. I love that picture – of a faith that puts no boundaries on God, that is willing to trust Him to do things beyond my imagination, that wants to follow God and go as far as He will take me. What could He do, what would He do if I stepped out in faith to start Women with Purpose? If I didn’t put borders on my faith but just followed Him wherever He led, whatever it meant, no matter how fearful I was?
Even though I told God in 1986 at a Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru) Christmas Conference that I would go wherever He wanted me to go and do whatever He wanted me to do, this was one of those times when doing that was scary. How thankful I am that He broke in that morning through this song to remind me again to not miss out, to step out in faith and see what He would do, and to have my faith grow stronger as a result.
This blog is part of the vision the Lord gave me for Women with Purpose – a step out on the waters. As I was putting it together, I decided that I wanted to have a picture of water with no borders as the header to remind me of this song and how God is calling me to trust Him and walk with Him. Believe it or not, the picture is one I took. It was the morning after I got engaged, and I was awake for the sunrise (a rare event!) because I could hardly sleep all night. That was another great step of faith with a wonderful blessing as a result. And I believe that following God to provide encouragement, development, and opportunities for women in my area to live with purpose will lead to great blessing as well. Steps of faith and obedience are always worth it. Always.
Where is God calling you to step out on the waters? Are there borders you are putting on Him, limits to your faith in what He can do and how He will provide for you? My prayer is that this blog will be an encouragement to you to follow Him wherever He calls with great faith and joy and to experience all He has for you in the purpose for which you were uniquely created.
